Toseina 2mg /ml Codeine Syrup is used in the symptomatic treatment of dry cough (not accompanied by mucus) in adults and adolescents over 12 years of age. This medicine is a red solution that comes in 100 and 250-ml bottles accompanied by a measuring cup.

Codeine

Codeine is an opiate and prodrug of morphine mainly used to treat pain, coughing, and diarrhea. It is also commonly used as a recreational drug. It is found naturally in the sap of the opium poppy, Papaver somniferum. It is typically used to treat mild to moderate degrees of pain.

Codeine Syrup Composition

The active substance is codeine phosphate hemihydrate. Each ml of oral solution contains 2 mg of codeine phosphate hemihydrate.

The other ingredients (excipients) are sodium benzoate (E-211), citric acid monohydrate, hydroxyethylcellulose, sodium saccharin, aspartame (E-951), sorbitol (E-420), contramaro aroma, raspberry essence, azorubine (E -122) and purified water.

Codeine dosage forms

Adults over 18 years old: The typical dose is 5 mL (1 teaspoonful) by mouth every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Do not take more than 30 mL (6 teaspoonfuls) in a day. Promethazine/codeine is not recommended for use in children under 18 years old.

How to store

Store in the original package in order to protect it from light. Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton after EXP. The expiration date is the last day of the month indicated. Medications should not be disposed of down the drain or in the trash. Deposit the containers and medications that you do not need at the SIGRE Point of the pharmacy. If in doubt, ask your pharmacist how to dispose of containers and medicines you don’t need. This way you will help to protect the environment.

Possible side effects

This medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Be aware that many of the effects may be symptoms of your illness and will therefore improve when you start to feel better. Although the frequency of side effects are: constipation, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and somnolence. Seizures, mental confusion, altered mood, and itching have also been reported. Skin rashes may appear in allergic patients.

At high doses and in the long term it can cause respiratory depression.
